Why Is the Media Afraid to Tackle Livestock's Role... →
sevennation:
A really interesting article that highlights how much factory farming effects our climate change. I find it hypocritical when environmentalists push reducing your carbon print, yet actively consume meat.
“In particular, the report concluded that livestock production accounts for 18%, or one-fifth, of global emissions. This figure is higher than all transportation sources...

Victory! India bans planting of first GMO food... →
ratsandcandy666:
This is big news!!!! Should this have been approved, Monsanto would have gotten its foot in the door to push other GM crops on India to the detriment of its biodiversity and the livelihood of farmers. Due to the resistance of farmers, consumers, environmentalists and the protests against it there is at least a tentative victory on this being stopped. Thank you India!

Al Gore mentions factory farming on SNL.
I almost feel….vindicated. If he hadn’t said anything about agriculture, I was never going to listen to another word he said.

The Vegetarian solution to water pollution.
By VRG Research Director Jeanne Yacoubou, MS
In 2006, the United Nations released a report assessing livestock raising and its impact on the environment. Henning Steinfeld, senior author of this report, announced, “Livestock are one of the most significant contributors to today’s most serious environmental problems.… Urgent action is required to remedy the situation.”

dread, etc.
Sometimes, I approach just about everything that I do with an overwhelming feeling of dread. Writing papers, writing surveys, attending events, etc. Yesterday, I met with a friend of a very dear friend and mentor. She gave me some great ideas and inspiration.
I think that I made some progress today. I’ve been so overwhelmed with midterms for the past two weeks that I let this project,...

Updates
Since UB gets a lot of their dairy from the Upstate Farms Cooperative, I’ve been trying to get a tour of a farm in the cooperative. After my first email, they responded with a lot of questions for me (am I from WNY, what is my ‘major’, have I ever visited a farm, etc.) I answered the questions and made it clear that I want to visit a dairy farm in their co-op. Have not heard...

It's been awhile...
I spoke with the director of campus dining at UB on 9/17. I was worried that he would make me feel as if everything has already been done. I was right to worry. They are doing some great things—some of which is not for public record yet. But there is still a lot to do!
They are trayless. Meaning, they don’t use trays, which encourages students to eat only what they can. This...

This blog focuses on the environmental implications of factory farming, but there is another side to this type of farming: the inhumane treatment of animals. I did this walk a couple of years ago and it was a great experience. We raised a lot of money and I hope to do it again this year! Farm Sanctuary is an amazing organization, and I encourage you to look into it. Any help is appreciated! ...

I emailed the director of campus dining at UB today in hopes of meeting with him in the coming weeks. I need to write a draft of the survey I want to conduct to gauge attitudes/behaviors towards food among UB students.
